On Friday evening, February 8, the Berkeley College Department of Athletics honored the 2017-2018 men's basketball team with a private ring ceremony in the 43rd street building of the New York City campus to commemorate the team's USCAA National Basketball championship this past March.
The USCAA title marked the fourth consecutive National crown for the Knights. During the season, Berkeley posted a 10-0 record at home, and finished the season on a 25-game winning streak. For the year, Berkeley dropped only one game, finishing the campaign a dominant 28-1. In addition, the Knights produced a National Player of the Year in Michael Taylor, a National First-Team All-American in Johnnie Green, and a USCAA Second-Team All-American in Ricardo Ayuso. All three of the aforementioned student-athletes also earned recognition as HVIAC All-Conference Players.
At tonight's ceremony, student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and special guests were treated to an impressive spread of entrees, desserts, salad, and beverages, and championship rings were presented to student-athletes and the coaching staff . A numbers of speakers praised the team's heart, determination, motivation, and sacrifice, including the President of Berkeley College, Michael Smith. Other speakers included the Director of Athletics Andy DeStephano, as well as Jonathan Pena, who received his first ring as the team's Head Coach.
This season, the Knights are 17-4, and are currently on a 10-game winning streak. Berkeley is 5-0 in HVIAC action, and is one victory away from clinching yet another HVIAC regular season title. The Regional tournament is scheduled for February 16 and February 17 at the College of New Rochelle. Should Berkeley win that tournament, it will punch its ticket to another appearance in the USCAA National Tournament, where the team would shoot for its fifth consecutive USCAA title.
