Men's basketball earns 3-2 record in February, but season finalizes in NACIA semifinals

The Berkeley College men's basketball team posted a mark of 3-2 in the month of February, securing victories at Villa Maria (110-73 on February 7), home against Five Towns College (93-89 on February 11), and at Bryant & Stratton-Albany (97-89 on February 13), while falling at Bryant & Stratton-Buffalo (90-79 on February 8) and Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse (87-77 on February 21). The aforementioned defeat against Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse came in the semifinal round of the NACIA Men's Basketball Tournament, subsequently ending the Knights' season. For the 2025-2026 campaign, Berkeley finished at 12-16.

February 7, 2025: Berkeley 110, Villa Maria 73

In Berkeley's victory over the Vikings, five players scored in double figures, including Maurece Thompson, as he finished with a game-high 26 points (10-22 FG) to go along with a game-high six steals, three rebounds, and two assists. DaMarco Watson (10-16 FG) added 20 points, a team-high eight boards, and four steals, and Deontay Sprattley finalized his afternoon with 19 points, seven rebounds, a game-high five assists, and four steals. Justin Umunakwe (12 points, four steals, three rebounds) and Emmanuel Mayfield (10 points, five rebounds, two assists) also played key roles in Berkeley's triumph.

Despite the loss for Villa Maria, Jeremiah Clarke posted a double-double with a team-high 24 points and a game-high 19 rebounds. He also swatted a game-high three shots, and dished three assists. Gregory Sanders added 17 points, three rebounds, and three assists, and Leonte Jones scored 11 points, snatched three boards, and dished three assists. Finally, it was Ruben Noris scoring 10 points, collecting two rebounds, and dishing two assists.

Berkeley College dominated winless Villa Maria, trailing for only 11 seconds the entire game. The Knights built a commanding 21-point lead at the half (57-36), and went up by as many as 47 in the second session, before winning the game convincingly by 37.

Both teams shot very well from the floor, with the Knights earning a 48.9 percent conversion rate (43-88), and Villa Maria connecting on 28 out of 62 shot attempts (45.2 percent). Berkeley held a slim 42-39 edge on the glass, while also holding a 23-7 advantage in steals. Villa Maria held a 3-0 edge in blocked shots, and both teams dished 15 assists. Berkeley won the turnover battle by a large margin, committing only 14 miscues, while the Vikings had 33.

February 8, 2025: Bryant & Stratton (Buffalo) 90, Berkeley 79

Four players scored in double figures for Berkeley in its loss to Bryant & Stratton (Buffalo), including Watson (team-highs of 21 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals), Sprattley (17 points, six rebounds, three assists), Umunakwe (12 points, four rebounds), and Yasin Abdur-Rashid (12 points, two assists, two steals).

TaRon Benton was fantastic for the hosts, as he scored a game-high 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds and a pair of assists. Phil Jones Jr. contributed 18 points (6-6 FT), six rebounds, and a game-high four assists, and Arthur Dukes added 14 points and three assists. Jahid Kaarim (12 points, three rebounds) and Massai Graham (10 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and two assists) also played key roles in their team's victory.

Bryant & Stratton (Buffalo) held a 43-33 advantage after 20 minutes of play, and did a great job maintaining its lead in the second half, outscoring Berkeley 47-46 to account for the 11-point margin of victory.

The Bobcats were far more efficient shooting the basketball on the day, nailing 29 of their 69 shot attempts (42 percent), while the Knights connected on just 29 out of 83 attempts (34.9 percent). Bryant & Stratton (Buffalo) held a 54-44 edge on the glass, while also dishing 16 assists to Berkeley's eight. Each team recorded nine steals and a block, and the Bobcats won the turnover battle, committing 16 miscues to the Knights' eight.

February 11, 2025: Berkeley 93, Five Towns College 89

In the Knights' victory over the Sound, Sprattley contributed a game-high 26 points (11-21 FG). He also dished four assists, snatched three rebounds, and swiped a pair of steals. Watson finished with 18 points, a game-high of 11 rebounds, and his six assists tied for the game-high. He also contributed three steals. Abdur-Rashid finished with 16 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and Dimitry Hayes contributed 16 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Finally, it was Thompson adding 10 points.

Three players scored 20 points or more for Five Towns, including Tayron Bangs, as he scored a team-high 25 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Myles Gregory added 24 points, six rebounds, an assist, and a steal, and Khamari Broomfield finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals.

After leading by 11 points at intermission (50-39), Five Towns College made the game interesting, but the Knights were able to hold off the Sound, winning the game by four points (93-89).

Berkeley was more efficient shooting the basketball on the evening, earning a conversion rate of 46.8 percent (37-79), while the Sound connected on 33 out of 77 shots (42.9 percent). The Knights held a 46-43 edge on the glass, while also swiping 11 steals to the Sound's six. Berkeley held a 6-2 edge in blocked shots, while each team recorded 15 assists. Both teams took care of the basketball well, with Berkeley turning the ball over just 14 times, and the Sound doing so only 15.

February 13, 2025: Berkeley 97, Bryant & Stratton-Albany 89

In the Knights' comeback victory over Bryant & Stratton-Albany, Sprattley put forth an incredible performance, scoring a game-high 35 points (13-23 FG, 6-7 FT). Abdur-Rashid added 28 points, and Watson and Hayes scored 23 and 11, respectively.

For the hosts, Abou Ba netted a team-high 23 points, while Zay Little added 21. D'Avoni Jones and Javon Long netted 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Bryant & Stratton-Albany led 54-45 at halftime, but Berkeley College dominated the second half, outscoring the hosts 52-35 to win the game, 97-89.

February 21, 2025: Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse 87, Berkeley 77

In Berkeley's NACIA defeat to Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse, Watson and Abdur-Rashid tied for the game-high of 24 points. Watson also snatched a team-high 11 rebounds while adding two assists, and Abdur-Rashid finished with five boards, three assists, and three steals. Sprattley also added 19 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse's Jordan Drain scored a team-high 23 points while snatching 11 rebounds. Khai Pugh put together a monster double-double, scoring 21 points while grabbing a game-high 21 rebounds, dishing four assists, and tallying two steals. Matthew Cleveland and Keishon Crosby also played key roles in the victory, netting 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Bobcats led by as many as 19 points in the first half, and held a 48-35 advantage at intermission. Berkeley rallied to take a 59-58 advantage on Sprattley's bucket with 12:31 left, and that would be the first of six lead changes over the ensuing 5:50, with Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse finally taking the lead for good, 71-70, when Drain completed a three-point play with 6:41 remaining in the game. Berkeley converted on just one more field goal the rest of the way, as the Bobcats outscored the knights 19-7 down the stretch to win the game by 10.

Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse converted on 30 of 74 shots from the floor (40.5 percent), while Berkeley connected on just 28 out of 83 shot attempts (33.7 percent). The Bobcats held a 58-48 advantage on the glass, while also dishing 16 assists to the Knights' nine. Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse held a 10-8 advantage in steals, but Berkeley held a 6-3 advantage in swatted shots. Both teams took care of the basketball well, with Berkeley finishing with 13 turnovers, and the Bobcats committing 15.
