The Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners for the period of September 30 through October 6 this past Tuesday, Berkeley College athletics was well represented. Amadou Sy represented the New York men's soccer team by being selected as the Player of the Week. Men's cross country's Jay Sanchez was tabbed as the Runner of the Week, and represented the women's cross country unit was Monica Hayes, as she was selected the top runner on the female side.
For Sy, it was the second consecutive week in which he earned HVIAC Player of the Week honors. In an impressive two-match stretch, the Dakar, Senegal product notched a goal against Vaughn (October 2) to help the Knights remain undefeated in conference play, while also recording a hat trick in Berkeley's dominating 6-0 victory over Penn State Lehigh Valley this past Saturday.
Berkeley College's New York men's soccer team will wrap-up its regular season with three HVIAC matches. The Knights will play three road matches, including an October 12 matinee against Culinary (1:00pm), a match under the lights against The King's College-NY (October 16, 8:30pm), and a late afternoon clash with Five Towns on October 23 (4:30pm).
Sanchez and Hayes earned HVIAC recognition by being the top runners for Berkeley in their respective genders at the NJIT XC Challenge this past Saturday. Sanchez, a Woodland Park, NJ native, covered the course at the 8K event in 33:17. Hayes, a sophomore dasher from Staten Island, NY, crossed the tape at 25:21 in the women's 5K race.
The men's and women's cross country teams will resume their seasons this weekend on Saturday, October 12, as Berkeley will compete at the Desales University Invitational in Center Valley, PA. Start-time for the meets is scheduled for 10:30am.
