The Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its 2014 Women's Soccer All-Conference team this past Sunday, and for the second consecutive year, Berkeley College's Briana Ortega was honored, as she earned a spot on the squad for her inspiring efforts this past season.
Ortega – a New York native and veteran of the program – did a phenomenal job of setting a positive example for the younger players on the team. Her versatility and durability were especially evident in a game against York College back on Wednesday, October 8, when despite allowing three goals in net, she also stopped 20 shots and kept the Knights in the game despite not being a regular at the goalkeeper position.
She capped her season back on Thursday, October 23, when in a loss to St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn, she scored Berkeley College's lone goal on a breakaway in the second half.
In what turned out to be a very challenging season for the Berkeley College New York women's soccer team, Ortega led by example, as she was one of only two Knights to play in and start all five of the team's games. Knights Head Coach Michael Butler believes Ortega felt it was important for her to send the right message to the younger players on the team in her junior season with the squad.
"Briana takes a lot of pride in giving her best efforts and encouraging those around her to do the same, and I feel as though that was evident in 2014," Butler said. "As a team, we definitely had some growing pains this season, but Briana was there every step of the way giving 100 percent, and I think that is something that the younger players will remember as they attempt to evolve in the future. I'm very proud of Briana, and her positivity and versatility are strengths that she brings to this program. Being named to the All-Conference team is something she deserves."
